Oral presentation

Presenting in front of a group of people is an art, which require cautious planning and paying attention to delivering quality. Visual aids, presentation software in computers and notes are used for effective and forceful communication. Before presenting, some questions need to be remembered like the targeted audience, their knowledge of the topic, their expectations from the presentation and the message to be delivered.

A good oral presentation should be well planned. The structure and content should be accustomed to what is spoken. The arguments should be short and crisp as it becomes difficult for the listener to understand and grasp long arguments. Main points of the topic should be covered in brief and given enough importance. Difficult points should be made easier to understand using examples and illustrations.

Different people have different levels of confidence, but everyone gets nervous while speaking in public. Presentations skills can be improved keeping in mind a few simple practices like tone of the voice, understanding of the audience and using visual aids. Tone of the voice implies the speed, volume, clarity, pronunciation and fluency. Practicing beforehand dramatically improves the tone of the voice. Eye contact is a very important aspect of communicating with the audience. Audience’s response is also a prerequisite for a good oral presentation. While presenting notes should be made so as not to lose the flow of the topic. Reading from a prepared text or memorizing should be avoided, as the speech tends to be boring. Use of visual aids makes the presentation more interesting and makes it easy to understand. Thus, oral presentation plays a vital role in the communication process.
